Dramnyen Notation

Documenting and teaching traditional Tibetan lute music through interactive digital notation

Dramnyen Notation

Overview

The dramnyen is the soul of Tibetan folk music — a centuries-old lute whose sound runs through every traditional song. But the instrument is bulky, handmade, and nearly impossible to find outside Tibet and India. For Tibetans in diaspora, the barrier to playing dramnyen was enormous: you could love the sound, but you couldn't access it.

Dramnyen Notation breaks that barrier by bringing the authentic dramnyen sound to any computer. Master musician Tenzin Norbu (Tenor), a former artist at TIPA (Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts), recorded every note with precise technical guidance. Techung — one of the most renowned Tibetan musicians alive and a Terma Heritage advisor — provided additional artistic direction.

The result is a web-based tool where anyone can compose traditional Tibetan melodies using the real seven-note scale, each tone rooted in ancient animal-sound associations: peacock cry, bull lowing, goat bleating, heron call, cuckoo call, horse neighing, elephant trumpeting.

How It Works

1

Type numbers 1–7 to compose melodies using the traditional Tibetan scale, where each note echoes an animal sound from ancient tradition

2

9 authentic tempo presets spanning courtly Nangma (from the 5th Dalai Lama era) to energetic circle-dance Toeshey from Western Tibet

3

Real dramnyen samples recorded by master musician Tenzin Norbu, processed through a 7-stage audio effects chain

4

Artistic direction by Techung, one of the most renowned living Tibetan musicians

5

Uses authentic re-entrant tuning (La-Re-Sol), preserving the traditional system where the fifth note drops lower

6

Save and share compositions via URL — no instrument, no training, just the sound of Tibet

Methodology
